Saint Columba

The stained glass window on our bulletin cover depicts Saint Columba landing on the eve of Pentecost at the island of Iona. St. Columba was born in Ireland about 521. He had an extensive ministry in Ireland being accounted as one of the Twelve Apostles of Erin. In 563 after a feud in which 3000 of his clan were slain, he embarked with twelve companions in a wicker coracle covered with leather. When he landed at Iona he was 42 years old. He was determined to win for Christ as many souls as had been lost in the battle. There he built a monastery, evangelized the Picts of Scotland, and planted the Church in Aberdeenshire. He never let a single hour pass without engaging in prayer or reading or writing. He endured the hardships of fasting and vigils without rest by day and night. In the midst of all his toils, he appeared loving unto all, serene and holy, rejoicing in the joy of the Holy Spirit in his heart. He died in 597 and his feast is observed throughout the United States, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand on June 9.
